Draught proofing

Draught proofing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to save energy in any type of home. By sealing the gaps where cold air comes in and warm air escapes, you can make your home feel much warmer without even turning up the thermostat.

Priority areas

1. Windows

For windows that open, use self-adhesive foam strips (cheaper but shorter-lasting) or metal/plastic strips with brushes (more expensive but more durable). For windows that don’t open, use a silicone sealant.

2. Doors

  • External doors: Install a “brush” or “flap” at the bottom and draught-excluding strips around the frame. Don’t forget a letterbox brush and a cover for the keyhole.
  • Internal doors: Draught-proof the doors to unheated rooms (like a garage, conservatory, or spare room) to keep the warmth in your living spaces.

3. Floors and skirting boards

Gaps between floorboards and along the skirting boards can be filled with flexible silicone sealant or specialized “draught strips.”

4. Lofts and chimneys

  • Loft hatch: Ensure your loft hatch is insulated and has a draught seal around its edge.
  • Chimneys: If you have an open fireplace that you don’t use, install a “chimney balloon” or a “chimney sheep” to stop warm air from being sucked up the flue.

Safety Warning: Ventilation is Vital While sealing draughts is great, you must not block intentional ventilation. This includes trickle vents in windows, air bricks in walls, and extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Blocking these can lead to condensation, mould, and even carbon monoxide poisoning if you have a gas fire or boiler.

Estimated savings

Draught proofing an average home can save around £45 per year on energy bills. If you also draught-proof an open chimney, you could save an additional £65 per year.

DIY vs Professional

Most draught-proofing tasks are simple DIY jobs. You can buy all the materials at local DIY stores. However, if you have a very old property with complex draught issues, a professional draught-proofer can provide a more comprehensive solution.
