RFID card not working on charger
What you’re seeing (symptoms)
You tap your RFID card or key fob against the charger’s reader, but nothing happens. The charger doesn’t beep, the status lights don’t change, and the charging session doesn’t start. You may see a “Card Not Recognized” message in the app.
What’s normal vs not normal
Normal:
- A 1-2 second delay for the card to be authenticated over the internet.
- The charger making a single “beep” or flash when the card is successfully read.
Not normal:
- The charger being completely unresponsive to a known working card.
- The card working on one charger but not another of the same brand.
- The RFID reader light flashing red every time a card is tapped.
Likely causes (ranked)
- Card not activated: The RFID card has been received but hasn’t been “paired” or activated within the manufacturer’s app.
- Internet connection lost: The charger needs to talk to the server to verify your card; if the charger is offline, the card won’t work.
- Account issues: Your account balance is zero, or the card has been suspended/expired in the management portal.
- Hardware failure: The RFID antenna inside the charger has come loose or is faulty.
- Interference: Holding the card too close to your phone or other contactless cards in your wallet can interfere with the signal.
Quick checks you can do safely
- Use the app: Try starting the session via the phone app instead. If this works, the charger’s internet connection is fine, and the issue is specifically with the card or reader.
- Remove from wallet: Take the RFID card out of your wallet and tap it directly against the reader’s “sweet spot” (usually marked with a logo).
- Check the app status: Open the app and ensure the card’s ID number matches what is shown in your profile.
- Reboot the charger: Switch the power off and on again to reset the RFID reader module.
When to call an installer
- If the app works but the RFID reader remains dead after a reboot.
- If you see physical damage to the front of the charger where the reader is located.
- If you need a replacement RFID module or a new set of paired cards.
Questions to ask your installer
- “Can the RFID reader be bypassed or set to ‘Auto-Start’ if it continues to fail?”
- “Is the internal RFID antenna cable securely connected to the main board?”
- “Are there any firmware updates specifically for the RFID authentication logic?”

FAQs
Do I have to use the card? No. Most modern chargers allow you to use the phone app instead. Some also have a “Plug and Charge” mode where no authentication is needed at all. Can I use any RFID card? No. You must use the specific card provided by the charger manufacturer or one that has been officially added to your account via their portal. Is it waterproof? Yes, the RFID reader is behind the charger’s plastic casing and is designed for outdoor use. Why do I need a card at all? RFID cards are useful if you have a “socketed” charger in a public area (like a shared driveway) to prevent other people from stealing your electricity. What if I lose my card? You should immediately “Deactivate” it in the app to prevent unauthorized use, then order a replacement from the manufacturer.\n
